MEET JANETTE
I am a working mom of two Houston ISD elementary students. My goal is to make a high-quality education available to every child in our school district.
I have lived in Houston for over 20 years as a successful management consultant and passionate advocate for educational equity. I was a Latinos for Education board fellow in 2019 and served as the main community representative on the Arts Connect Houston leadership committee. In that capacity I shaped and led strategic decisions that helped move HISD closer to closing equity gaps and ensuring more students have access to the arts as part of a complete education.
As a native of Brownsville, TX, I understand the challenges and struggles so many Latino families in Houston face. My mom was a widow and made ends meet running an in-home day care. I was lucky to have had the benefit of teachers who were committed to my academic success. I started my first job at 15 and have worked ever since, supporting myself through college at the University of Texas at Austin. I know what it means to work hard and persevere, just as so many families in Houston do each day.
We all want the best opportunities for our kids, and I will work to ensure a high-quality education is available to all children no matter their background, finances, or zip code. Please help me continue this work as your HISD District 1 Trustee.
